The Faculty of
Dentistry at the University of Toronto has announced the creation
of a new centre to treat children under deep sedation or general
anaesthesia. This surgicare centre is due to open on September
1, 2005 and will accept referrals by dentists for children who
are covered by government sponsored programs, private health
insurance or personal payment. It is recognized that there is
a decline in access to general anaesthesia and operating rooms
for dental patients with some children waiting for up to one
year for treatment. Dentists can fax the completed information
to the surgicentre and the patient’s family will be contacted
directly to book the initial visit . Upon completion of the
dental care, the family will be instructed to return to their
regular dentist for ongoing preventative therapy.
